Black & Decker Toaster Oven TRO4070

toaster will not shut off

toaster oven TRO4070 just purchaased, and toaster will not shut off.. Just tried it by going up in timer and reducing to toast setting. Is this what I have to do? The manual says just set to light, medium or dark.
