KitchenAid Appliances Trash Compactor KUCC151

not working

my compactor is stuck about 1 inch from the totally up position and won't move up or down. when i hit switch it just hums. If i continue to hit switch the unit motor stops completely for about 3 to 4 minutes and then comes on again. I can't open door because the compactor is about 1 inch down and doesn't allow the door to open! any suggestions. thanks
